Week 4 – Three Point Perspective
· This week, I was tasked with finding either in real life or (if covid prevented) use google maps to find interesting architecture around Leicester to then draw a three-point perspective drawing.
Reference:
· Because
the weather was generally terrible and I did not feel safe going out drawing
for long periods of time outside, I used Google maps. I chose to use this angle
of the church on Guildhall Lane as reference as it would really accentuate the perspective
points:

Thumbnail sketches:
· Before beginning my attempt at three point, I made a few thumbnails and attempted to pin down where the third point was, and how I would fit it on the page. I eventually saw that the best composition I could manage seemed to go off the page and the third point was very far off the page, so the spire was cut off at the tip.

Final Drawing:
· To begin, I drew out the general shapes of the building to try and establish on the page where the vanishing points for two point would be. I did this lightly so I could then further develop detail on top without using an eraser heavily.
·
I did not
have a ruler, so I used the flat edge of a book to allow me to get straighter
lines. This meant that a lot of the process was drawn out trying to get the
lines in the right location, so this took the most time out of the whole
process compared to rendering etc.
·
Overall,
I think the piece is successful; I tried to pull the perspective further from
the google distortion, however the building does still look quite distorted. It
does illustrate how effective three point can be, however, and I found this
reference to be very useful when understanding the theory of three point
perspective
·
If I were
to do this again I would add further detail to the church and develop stronger
values; as I was working I was squinting at my reference to gauge where the
blocks of value were so this is more successful than my previous attempts,
however I could have pushed it a lot further. The darkest points could be solid
black, and it leaves a lot of the page to highlights because of this and you can’t
see properly where the light source is meant to be coming from other than the
sky.
·
I could have also attempted to render more
materials such as the brick and wood differently, as all the shapes look more
like generic blocks instead of timbers and stone.
·
I would
also attempt to get the full building on the page through better planning and
forethought.
