Week 10 – Ellipses and Symmetry
·
This
week, the task took us back to doing a still life piece, which I was very happy
with as I feel like I have not been able to use tone in a very long time and
wanted to see where I could take it and how far I could take the contrast in
this piece.
·
I chose a
theme of “art materials! (very original) for my still life and set it up on top
of a tea towel covered box to give it a good grounding.
Progress look:
·
I did not
have any pictures of my starting sketch, however at this stage I was really
pushing for those super dark tones with the piercing white highlights to push the
contrast. It helped that the materials I chose to draw were quite reflective, so
this allowed for a lot of interesting lighting especially on the paint cans.
·
I enjoyed
doing this piece so much more than the technical work as it felt good to be
somewhat loose, however I could tell that the amount of time I spent analysing
perspective was really paying off as I was able to make the composition very
quickly and use basic vanishing points from observation without the assistance of
a grid.
·
If I were
to do this again I would rearrange the elements slightly to allow more space
between the shapes, however the composition of the still life still works from
a graduating height perspective going from lowest on the left to tallest on the
right.

Final Piece:
·
I am happy
with this piece and can see a lot of improvement from my first tonal at the beginning
of the year – The contrast on this piece in particular is so much better than
my first piece, and the perspective is much better than the mug at the start of
the year for example. This piece took me a couple of hours from start to
finish, but I think those hours were worth it
·
If I were
to do this again, I wouldn’t be sure what to change, I haven’t received peer
feedback for this yet since it is the last piece, however I think my time would
be best spent fixing my other pieces up to a similar standard.

Final Conclusions for the semester:
·
Overall,
I have learnt a lot more this semester than I probably did in my A levels in
total – I am much more confident in my drawing ability and now know many techniques
to make sure perspective is correct. I have also learnt a lot in terms of how
to improve my tonal work – I should be more confident with my line work, consider
line weight, focus on finding the darkest areas of my piece and the lightest
areas then work in to find the middle, and in some cases it turns out doing a primary
sketch with my left hand can be very helpful for keeping movement and
expression in my pieces.
·
If I were
to do this semester again, I would really emphasise putting more time into improving
pieces soon after feedback. I waited very late to do my improvements, and as
such it lead to a mass rush that I really would not like to repeat again.
