Traditional Drawing - Week 18

Week 18 - Value: how artists use value

·         This week, I was given some lectures to watch that would inform me on value and the importance of getting correct value in my drawings.

·         Value is a core fundamental of drawing that is incredibly important to the believability of your images, and so any chance I can get to improve or inform my shading skills would be very impactful.

Breaking down my reference image:

·         I set up this still life, aiming for a range of different materials, patterns, and values.

·         I liked the composition as a whole; I thought the flowers and the shape of the vase was interesting, and there was some high contrast in value around the black bottle and the darker areas oof the right bottle.

·         I was forced to use the windowsill for this due to it being the only place I could get strong, directional lighting, and I regret using it as a backdrop because it didn’t provide a flat background.

Final Piece:

·         When developing this piece, I tried developing the values in light layers throughout to gauge their relative values as described in the lectures. I struggled with breaking down the glass materials this week whilst also trying to apply the lecture content.

·         I was not overly fond of the piece at this stage, it looked very flat, and it looked a lot stiffer than my usual pieces. I found myself overcompensating for the pattern flower’s line weight overall with harsh lines.

·         The most positive thing I can say about this piece is that I seem to be getting sizing and proportion correct, as well as perspective on objects like the boxes.

·         If I were to do this again, I would have taken a lot more care into the piece as a whole – I could feel myself being sloppy and hitting a wall which I was working through.

Final piece - Updated:

·         I updated the final piece from before, trying to smooth out the tones and add more contrast to the piece overall. I also tried refining the lines throughout to better establish the separation of objects.

·         These were subtle edits that mostly focussed on value areas instead of fixing the issues with the bottle symmetry, since that was the focus of this week’s task.

·         The bottle on the right seems to be very wonky now that I see it after a day’s break, so I would fix that in a future edit.

·         If I were to do this again, I would fix the bottle, and deepen the shading on both the fabric at the back and the boxes at the front so I could define the shapes better. And have the objects sit in the midground better as described in the lectures.

Final Conclusions:

·         I am not as happy with this week as I could be it seems like a downgrade of a piece in comparison to the week before with my stag skull in the museum.

·         I have learnt a lot from this week however, and I am happy I did this week to attempt to understand value better.
