Week 7 – Orthographic Drawing
· This weeks task was creating both a symmetrical and asymmetrical object in orthographic drawing – focussing on accuracy and keeping the forms straight.
Symmetrical Piece:
·
This week
was a bit of a downhill attempt to last week – I am much less happy with the
outcome of the drawing sessions as I really struggled with symmetry and keeping
my lines clean. I also didn’t have a ruler again for this week – which was a crucial
mistake.
·
The
drawings do however show the form of the object I was trying to convey – the bottle
is proportioned between all 3 views even if some of the shapes are not symmetrical
or vertically straight like in the front vie and side view.
·
If I were
to do this again, I would certainly use a ruler and a sharper pencil, and draw
a line of symmetry to obey in the centre of the bottle so I could compare each
side and correct the form. I will likely come back to this week with a revamped
version of the drawings, hopefully sharper, more confident and attempting to
show the form more accurately than this.

Asymmetrical Piece:
·
I believe
that my asymmetrical piece is more understandable where it is wonky or inaccurate
-I chose a very complex shape and so this one took a lot longer than the first
lung tonic bottle.
·
For this
one I used a lot more measurement lines however, so the overall shape transfers
between all three views successfully. The shape of the bottle is very readable,
and the proportions for all the sections are accurate to the bottle that was in
front of me.
·
If I were
to do this again, I would also use a sharper pencil and a ruler, along with a
vertical line to use as a guide instead of doing the whole thing free hand. I
also would use a grid behind the object instead of just singular measurement
lines, potentially using a section of the object as a unit of measurement to allow
me to measure the object in front of me and then transfer that measurement to
the grid.

UPDATES:
·
After
receiving criticism and acting on my previously posted self-criticism, I used a
ruler and a sharper pencil to straighten up the drawing and to convey the
proportions of the bottles more accurately. I found this much easier to do
after having a break from the work prior – as it let me see the mistakes a lot
clearer. I believe some of the drawings are a bit wonky, however they are at
least straight lines instead of hand drawn fuzzy lines like before.
